NCDOT's Public Transportation Division was created in 1974 by the N.C. General Assembly to foster the development of intercity, urban and rural (now referred to as "community") public transportation in North Carolina. Since the fall of 2007 when it was initiated, Charlotte’s light rail system has served an additional 2 million passengers annually.
