Department of History Annual Awards
 
The Bainbridge-Reynolds-Hayden Family Memorial Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest standing in all history courses.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed a major or FOS for which Department of History is proponent.
Criteria: Highest overall average Quality Point Average (QPA) in all history courses taken. Must include, as a minimum, fourth class core courses, the core course in History of the Military Art and four elective history courses. Validated plebe core courses will count for eligibility purposes but will not be used to determine QPA.
The National Society, Daughters of Colonial Wars Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest standing in the study of United States History.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed a major or FOS in United States History.
Criteria: Highest average QPA based on the six best grades from courses listed in the United States History stem and fourth class core history course. At least one 400-level course must be included.
Major John Alexander Hottell III Memorial Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest standing in the study of European History.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed a major or FOS in European History.
Criteria: Highest average QPA based on the six best grades from courses listed in the European History stem and the fourth class history course. At least one 400-level course must be included.
The Ambassador Shelby Cullom Davis Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest standing in the study of International and Strategic History.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed a major or FOS in International and Strategic History.
Criteria: Highest average QPA based on the six best grades from courses listed in the International and Strategic stem. At least one 400-level course must be included.
New York State Society of the Cincinnati Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest standing in the study of Military History or Military Art and Science.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed a major or FOS in Military History or Military Art and Science.
Criteria: Highest average QPA based on the six best history grades from courses required for the Military History or the Military Art and Sciences major or FOS. At least one 400-level course must be included.
The Brigadier General Vincent J. Esposito Award for Excellence in Military Art
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who achieved the highest average in History of the Military Art.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who completed either HI 301/302 or HI 351/352 or combination thereof. Cadets who previously received the Colonel John R. Elting Award are not eligible for this award.
Criteria: Highest average in either sequence.
The Colonel John R. Elting Award for Excellence in Military Art
Purpose: To recognize the second, third or fourth class cadet who achieves the highest average in the History of the Military Art in the current academic year.
Eligible: Underclass cadet who took HI 301/302 or HI 351/352 or a combination (HI 301/352) during the current academic year.
Criteria: Highest average QPA in either sequence. First class cadets are not eligible. The award will not be presented at the Awards Convocation.
General of the Army Omar N. Bradley Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who displays significant achievement and excellence in historical research and writing.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed Senior Thesis in History, HI 499, and whose Senior Thesis has been submitted by the Senior Thesis Advisor.
Criteria: That HI 499 Senior Thesis which manifests excellence in historical research as determined by a board of faculty members. Specific award selection criteria may vary annually but must include quality of research, analysis, and writing style.
The Nye Award For Excellence in Research in Military Affairs
Purpose: To recognize a graduating cadet who has demonstrated excellence in research in military affairs.
Eligible: Graduating cadets who have completed Senior Thesis in History, HI 499, and whose Senior Thesis has been submitted by the Senior Thesis Advisor.
Criteria: The HI 499 Senior Thesis which manifests excellence in historical research in military affairs as determined by a board of faculty members. Specific award selection criteria may vary annually but must include quality of research, analysis and writing style. The Award will not be presented at the Awards Convocation.
The Friends of the West Point Library Award for Excellence in Research and Writing
Purpose: To recognize a graduating cadet who has demonstrated excellence in historical research and writing.
Eligible: Graduating Cadets who have completed Senior Thesis in History, HI 499, and whose Senior Thesis has been submitted by the Senior Thesis Advisor.
Criteria: The HI 499 Senior Thesis which manifests excellence in historical research, writing and probability of publication as determined by a board for faculty members. Specific award selection criteria may vary annually but must include quality of research, analysis, and writing style. The Award will not be presented at the Awards Convocation.
The Stanley J. Love Award
Purpose: To recognize the graduating cadet who has demonstrated excellence in the study of Asian History.
Eligible: Graduating cadet who has taken HI 375 (History of China) and who meets the criteria below.
Criteria: Highest QPA based on the fourth class core course and a minimum of three of the following courses: HI 375, HI 377, HI 391B, HI 498 (subject related to Asian History) and HI 499 (subject related to Asian History). HI 375 must be taken. Validated fourth class courses will count for eligibility purposes, but will not be used to determine QPA. The award will not be presented at the Awards Convocation.
