Parco Virgiliano: Peaceful park lies within reach of the bustling city of Naples

Looking for a scenic getaway in Naples?

It might be hard to believe that not far from the Italian city’s center there is a beautiful park, unknown to many but offering everything needed for a day of quiet relaxation.

Parco Virgiliano is truly a hidden paradise in the busy, bustling city of Naples. A mere 45-minute drive from the Naples Support Site, and less than 30 minutes from Capodochino, a trip to Parco Virgiliano makes for an easy day trip.

And while life in the city offers boundless excitement, sometimes a peaceful day away from it all is just what the doctor ordered. Whether you’re looking for a new place for your children to play, a lovely spot for a picnic lunch on a sunny winter day or just a quiet place to read a book, Parco Virgiliano has it all, with stunning views to boot.

Perched on a hilltop in the neighborhood of Posillipo, Parco Virgiliano is a getaway of sheer beauty. Once inside the gates of the main entrance, you will see a small cobblestone square. On weekends, there are often vendors selling their wares, but on weekdays, the square is more apt to be vacant.

Leading from the square is a wide cobblestone walkway, lined with pine trees. You can follow the path to either the right or the left, as this lovely tree-lined walkway runs in a loop around the main part of the park.

One of the first things you will notice is the sweet scent of refreshingly clean air. Breath after glorious breath, the fresh air will be sure to bring a smile to your face. The park is remarkably clean and well kept, and is filled with green trees, lovely flowers — especially in spring and summer — fragrant rosemary and so much more.

Follow the path to the right and up a slope. After five minutes, you will reach the first of several viewing points. To the southwest is the tiny island of Nisida. It appears so close you could almost reach out and touch it. The Bay of Pozzuoli and the town of Bagnoli are to the west. You can also see the islands of Ischia and Procida, as well as Capri off in the distance.

Even on a cloudy day, the views are truly breathtaking. If you are there on a clear day, be sure to take your camera because you won’t want to miss this spectacular photo opportunity.

If your kids are with you and need a place to unwind, check out one of the playgrounds where they can slide and swing to their hearts’ content. You’ll also find a few quiet patches of grass, an idyllic place to lay down a blanket and unpack your picnic lunch.

There are a few cafes and bars scattered about the park, offering espresso, beer and other refreshments as well as light snacks. Most of these bars close during the week, but as you walk around you will find one or two open. Public restrooms are available, but you will need to bring tissues with you.

The park is easy to reach. From Capodichino, take the tagenziale bypass toward Naples. Take exit 10 and go left out of the toll booths. After the tunnel, take the second right on Via Diocleziano and then, after about 1½ miles, turn left on Via Coroglio at the “T.” As the road climbs toward Posillipo, take the first exit at the traffic circle and then after about a quarter-mile turn left on Via Tito Lucrezio Caro. Continue for a mile to the park.

There is a parking lot directly in front of the entrance to the park, as well as designated parking spots on Viale Virgilio, leading up to park’s main entrance.

Although the area is relatively low in crime, do not leave valuables in your car. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is no charge to enter.
