Your updates are great. The other USNWS groups in NY should follow your lead on the level of communication you provide. I'm not surprised that your number of FB fans outnumber other groups by nearly 7x. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

  2. The latest public briefing is up: http://1.usa.gov/SioUsa Please share this. This map shows the updated rainfall amounts for our area, with no big changes from earlier today. We remain most concerned right now with the potential for damaging winds with the entire area under a high wind watch for Monday and Tuesday: http://1.usa.gov/S4dbdu.

My favorite weather team of all time. So much is possible for me thanks to these guys and gals. They have epitomized opportunity and education for me. I couldn't thank them enough. Special thanks to my SKYWARN Instructors - David Nicosia, Michael Nadolski, and Erik Heden. So many people have had the opportunity to learn and grown within the weather community because you have chosen to dedicate your time and knowledge. Keep on doing what you do.

Here is a look at Sandy off the the southeast coast of the US. This is an infrared satellite loop, where we colorize the higher and colder cloud tops, as shown by the yellows and reds. This type of satellite allows us to view clouds at night.

hat, but a direct hit somewhere on the mid-Atlantic coast looks likely. This map shows our current best estimate for rainfall in our area through mid-week. Our best estimates indicate that rainfall of more than 4 inches will be enough to cause moderate flooding on major rivers, and rainfall of greater than 6 inches will cause major flooding. The forecast indicates that 1 to 3 inches is the most likely rainfall amount for our area; however with the storm still more than 2 days away, anyone with vulnerability to flooding should pay very close attention to the latest forecasts, watches and warnings, as just a slight change with the storm could still result in flooding rains. In addition, brief heavy downpours could cause localized flooding on area streams and poor drainage areas with amounts of less than 3 inches. Strong winds and damage to trees and power lines is also a big concern with this storm.

  7. Please share this information with others. The models have really focused in on an expected track for the storm, taking it west across central New Jersey into eastern Pennsylvania. There is still time for some fluctuations in the forecast...
of that track, but something close to that is getting much more likely. This map shows the probability that the storm will produce sustained winds of tropical storm force, or greater than 39 mph. Sustained winds of greater than 39 mph would be accompanied by gusts over 50 mph, which would be enough to cause widespread damage to trees and power lines. Best timing for the strongest winds in our area would be later Monday and continuing into Tuesday. Heavy rain will also be a threat with the storm later Monday through Tuesday.

are of the concern in our area given what we went through last year. We are still too far out to given exact details on how high the rivers will get or who may or may not flood. What we can see is the most "likely" scenario now is some flooding is possible on area rivers and creeks and the potential for wind may produce power outages. The best thing you can do now is monitor and prepare. We will have a much more clear idea of the exact impacts in our area, as we get closer. So again, monitor and prepare are the words now, exact details as we get closer.

  13. This is an image showing how the river stream gauges may respond to rainfall from Sandy. There are two solution groups here taking dozens of rainfall predictions and simulating them through the model that predicts river stages. Each set of ...
models contains "worst case" and "best case" scenarios. What you see here can be considered the middle of the road idea from each group. Note that the two graphics have a slightly different outcome, so we can't dwell on the details. At this point in time, the ONLY thing we can take away from this graphic is that Sandy is showing a potential to cause river flooding across CNY and NEPA if/when she arrives next week. The uncertainty is too great to indicate how high the rivers would get right now, but NOW is the time to prepare for what you would do should disaster strike.

  14. This is the 5 am Advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Notice the "cone of uncertainty" that is being advertised due to the varying model solutions. It appears that Sandy may make landfall somewhere near the Delaware Bay on Monday night. However, with this much model uncertainty landfall could range anywhere from New England to the NC coast! We cannot emphasize enough to pay attention to the latest forecasts.

For any of our fans across New England, did you feel it?

  49. Some showers possible tonight into early Tuesday, especially over CNY. For the rest of us it will feel much cooler Tuesday than it did today. Don't worry though, if you enjoyed our recent mild weather, it will make a return Wednesday and Thursday of this week with highs back into the 60s. http://graphical.weather.gov/sectors/bgm.php
