ACTION ALERT!
Georgia to Close State Archives to the Public on November 1st

September 20--On September 13, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced that the Georgia Archives will be effectively CLOSED to all public access beginning November 1, 2012.  He cites as reason the requirement for a 3% budget reduction for all state agencies. Secretary Kemp has chosen to take the required cut of nearly $750,000 entirely and only from the State Archives. On September 18, seven of the remaining ten full-time Archives staff members were told that they will be terminated on November 1. This leaves just the Archives director, the building manager, and one archivist to manage and provide access to holdings of more than 80,000 linear feet. Through the 1990s and up through 2006, the State Archives Georgia Archives supporthad about 47 employees. Staffing reductions brought the number down to 27 in 2010 and 15 earlier this year.

Find details on taking action in the Action Alert: Save the Georgia Archives.  See the Friends of Georgia Archives & History website for more information.

CoSA's president, Jim Corridan, sent a letter to the Georgia governor on September 18. CoSA's own statement on the closing will be posted shortly.
