Eminent Radiation Biology Researcher Joins PNNL
Dr. William F. Morgan joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory August 4, 2008, as Director of Radiation Biology and Biophysics in the Biological Sciences Division. Morgan, a leading researcher in the fields of radiation biology and the long-term biological effects of radiation exposure, will be the principal investigator for the U.S. Department of Energy's Low Dose Radiation Scientific Focus Area Program at PNNL. He will also provide scientific leadership in research on the effects of radiation exposure to human health.
Morgan, who most recently was Professor and Director of the Radiation Oncology Research Laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore, has been an Affiliate Scientist at PNNL since October 2006. His work focuses on the long-term biological effects of radiation exposure. He is a scientific representative for regulatory agencies such as the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the International Commission on Radiological Protection, and the National Council for Radiation Protection. Morgan is also on the editorial board for Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis and Mutation Research.
He received his undergraduate degree in botany, master’s degree and Ph.D. in cytogenetics, and a D.Sc. degree from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Before joining the University of Maryland in 1999, Morgan was on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
