Instructions on Searching EDOCS

The EDOCS search function allows the user to input criteria and search for all published documents based on the matching criteria entered.

Search Procedures

Step 1: Select the desired type of searches

Two types of EDOCS searches are available:

  1. EDOCS Quick Search

  2. The EDOCS quick search presents user with the most commonly used search criteria. A detailed explanation on these search fields are given below:

DA/FCC Number: This field is used to search documents by DA and FCC number. When used without "DA-" or "FCC-" prefix, search result has all documents with matching DA and FCC number. With prefix "DA-" it searches for matching DA number, and with prefix "FCC-" it searches for matching FCC number.
File/Report Number: This field is used to search documents by file and report number. File/Report number does not have a fixed pattern so the search result contains all documents with matching File or Report number.
Docket/RM: This field is used to search documents by Docket/Rulemaking number.
Release date: This field is used to search documents by release date.
Title/Description: This field is used to search documents by title and description. Search result has all documents contains the searched character strings in either the document title or the description.

Document title and description fields perform a wildcard search by default. Selected fields can also do a wildcard search by using a "%" character. These fields are FCC Number, DA Number, File Number, Report Number and Docket Number. Quick Search Example

  3. EDOCS Advance Search

  4. The advanced search lets you search by a much larger number of criteria including citations, title, description, docket numbers, dates, date range, as well as other numeric fields. The EDOCS advanced query works with any data element or combination of data elements. The results of your query are displayed in reverse chronological order.

Special features apply only to advance search

EDOCS advance search has the capability to search documents by various date ranges such as documents released during a specific time ranges. However, it can also search documents released on a specific date. By entering the beginning date without the ending date, or entering the ending date without the beginning date, the advance search will return documents released on that date. This feature applies to all date range criteria. In addition, EDOCS advance search has the capability to further narrow down the search results for specific Bureau, document type, FCC-only/DA-only etc. The refinement search criteria listed in the right column serves this purpose. Please note the refinement criteria can only be used as a supplemental filter to the main search criteria listed in the left column.

Common features apply to both types of searches

    • Search can be done with a combination of 2 or more fields to narrow down the search result. If a search is performed for " 06-1 " DA/FCC Number, output has two results, FCC-06-1 and DA-06-1. FCC-06-1 was released on " 01/18/2006 ". When searched with combination of " 06-1 " DA/FCC number and " 01/18/2006 " Release date, output is narrowed down to FCC-06-1.
    • Report format: The search results can be presented in either the condensed report format or the full report format. Click on the "Condensed report" and "Full report" action menu will toggle the search results between the two formats. The default format is the condensed report format for the quick search and full report format for the advanced search.

      1. Condensed report: The condensed report provides the title, description, released date, and links to its attachments.
      2. Full report: The full report provides additional information about the document, such as doc type, bureau, effective date, comment date, reply comment date, adopted date, issue date, report #, file #, Docket/RM, contact and citation. Federal register date on a full report also provides a link to GPO Federal Register site published on that date. Search for DA 06-1073 to see an example.

Both report formats also provide links to associated erratum if erratum exists. Search for DA 07-1097 to see an example.

Refer to the definitions to determine which search type will be most useful to you.
