Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner departs September 18 to attend the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review report for Bahrain at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

In delivering the U.S. intervention, Assistant Secretary Posner will note the important steps Bahrain has made through the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), highlight concerns, and emphasize the need to fully implement the BICI’s recommendations despite flagging momentum. Following his meetings at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Assistant Secretary Posner will meet the European Union’s first Special Representative for Human Rights, Stavros Lambrinidis in Brussels, Belgium. Assistant Secretary Posner will also have a press availability with European media at the U.S. - European Media hub.
