Continuous School Improvement

Continuous School Improvement (CSI) is an ongoing process that helps schools focus their efforts in support of their mission and goals.  School performance and school/community data is analyzed and used to develop plans to ensure all students are learning and progressing toward achievement of academic standards.

Essence

Students at Stowers will be able to communicate ideas clearly and effectively in writing.

Strategy/Intervention

1.  Students will apply effective traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, conventions, word choice, and sentence fluency) across the curriculum.
2.  Students will demonstrate competence in applying these traits.

Supporting Strategies

  • Teachers will model and teach the use of the writing traits weekly. 
  • Teachers will practice with students the skills associated with applying trait characteristics in writing daily.
  • Students will learn and apply the use of trait characteristics in writing across the curricular area weekly.
  • Teachers will assess students’ use of the writing traits every five weeks.
  • Teachers will use assessment data to modify and reshape instruction to meet student learning needs.

Staff Development

  • Teachers will use research-based strategies to improve students’ writing skills.
  • Teachers will receive instruction in the teaching of the writing traits, as well as scoring the writing with reliability.
  • Teachers will receive instruction in providing writing feedback to students and differentiating instruction to meet student needs.

Goal 2:  All students will improve in math problem solving and reasoning.  

Essence

At Stowers, problem solving involves analyzing given information and applying strategies to demonstrate and communicate mathematical thinking.

1.  Students will use four-step problem solving method to solve real-world, open-ended math
      problems.
2.  Students will use specific strategies for problem solving and apply knowledge to solve open-
      ended tasks.

Supporting Strategies

  • Teachers will model and teach a four-step problem solving method and a specific strategy for solving the problem weekly. 
  • Teachers will practice with students a four-step problem solving method and a specific strategy for problem solving a minimum of two times a week.
  • Students will learn a four-step problem solving method and specific strategies for problem solving and apply this knowledge to solve problem solving tasks weekly.
  • Teachers will use assessment data to respond to individual students’ instructional needs.

Staff Development

  • Teachers will use research-based strategies to improve students’ problem solving and reasoning skills.
  • Teachers will receive instruction in the four-step problem solving process.
