Youth and Tobacco Town Hall Meeting and Archived Webcast

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. and nearly all tobacco use begins during youth and young adulthood.  To combat this, FDA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, along with local public health authorities, held a Youth and Tobacco Town Hall in Seattle, WA, on June 14, 2012.

Three top health leaders joined public health professionals, policymakers, educators, and—most importantly—young people from around the Pacific Northwest to share tools and best practices in tobacco use prevention. They also discussed how to enhance existing prevention efforts and devise new strategies to help youth resist pressures to start using tobacco.

Speakers included: 

• FDA Center for Tobacco Products Director, Dr. Lawrence Deyton, discussed an action agenda for tobacco product regulation.
• Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, highlighted the 2012 report Preventing Tobacco Use among Youth and Young Adults.
• Dr. Timothy McAfee, CDC Office on Smoking and Health Director, presented CDC's work in tobacco use prevention.
