The Stephen T. Mather Training Center is collaborating with the National Center for Preservation and Technology Training to hold a course on “Preservation and Treatment of Park Cultural Resources.” The event will be hosted at the Cane River Creole National Historical Park in Natchitoches, La., April 18-22, 2011.
This 40-hour course is a competency-based curriculum is open to Facility Managers and Chiefs of Maintenance who are the front-line stewards for a wide diversity of park cultural resources. The curriculum focuses on the critical knowledge and skills these groups must possess in order to provide essential direction and oversight relating to the preservation, treatment, and maintenance of park cultural resources. This course focuses on a team approach, partnering with resource specialists toward a shared understanding and appreciation of the evaluation, documentation, and treatment of park cultural resources. This is a field-based course within a park setting that serves as a laboratory for applying the knowledge and skills presented in classroom sessions.
Course Objectives:
Following completion of this module, participants will be able to:
- Apply the steps in the planning process to research, assess, develop and implement short and long term strategies specific to park cultural resources.
- Develop and execute preservation and rehabilitation treatments within the framework of laws, regulations, policies, standards and documents that govern work on cultural resources.
- Integrate compliance timelines into the planning process, integrating NEPA and NHPA processes to reduce or eliminate decisions whose results expose management to controversial or legal actions.
- Ensure that all preservation, treatment intervention, and maintenance work accomplished is evaluated, documented and preserved.
- Integrate the preservation and treatment of park cultural resources within the Framework of current Facility Management Practices and the Facility Management Software System (FMSS).
Course Details
Competencies: This course addresses the following cultural resources stewardship competencies: preservation law, philosophy, and practice; research and inventory; planning and compliance; preservation, treatment, and maintenance; and program and project management.
Participants: Facility Managers and Chiefs of Maintenance; Managers with Cultural Resource Responsibilities.
Dates: April 18 – April 22, 2011.
Travel dates are Sunday, April 17 & Friday, April 22 after 3:30 pm.

Tuition: No Tuition. Course costs are being paid for by Mather Training Center
Travel Cost: Benefiting account pays for participants’ travel and per diem.
Lodging at Natchitoches is $77 per night, M&IE is $46.
