The VA Building Utilization Review and Repurposing (BURR) initiative has identified approximately four (4) acres of vacant land at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming for a long-term ground lease.  VA is soliciting qualified developers to submit proposals to finance, design, construct, equip, furnish, manage, operate and maintain a new Senior/Non-Seniors Independent Housing Residences/Facility, for at-risk Veterans, with priority placement for Veterans and their families.

The Cheyenne VAMC is an approximate 52-acre campus located approximately two miles east-northeast of downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming.  It is also significant for its monumental main building (Resource 1, 1932) that serves as the focal point for the historic district and suggests a strong national pride following World War I and continuing after the Second World War.  Construction on the Cheyenne VA Hospital began in 1932, and the hospital opened in 1934.  Construction of additional buildings and structures continued within the campus throughout the latter half of the twentieth century.  The Cheyenne VAMC was designated a general medical and surgical hospital serving Veterans of southeastern Wyoming, northern Colorado and western Nebraska.  The historic district continues to retain unique characteristics, such as the campus setting, a monumental main building, buildings functionally grouped together, and the hierarchal use of architectural decorative elements on the exteriors of the buildings creating a cohesive architectural campus setting.  The use of revivalist architecture reflects the importance of VA and its mission to provide medical care to the nation’s Veterans.  The Cheyenne VAMC is an excellent example of a Period II general medical and surgical Second Generation Veterans Hospital that retains characteristics of this sub-type.  The hospital is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

The Cheyenne VAMC is associated with three Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Fort Collins and Greeley, Colorado as well as in Sidney, Nebraska.  The Cheyenne VAMC is a level three (3) facility, providing primary and secondary inpatient services in medicine and standard surgical procedures, with an authorization to provide intermediate level, orthopedic procedures, as well as outpatient services in medicine, surgery and psychiatry.  It is a combined affiliated medical center under Veterans Health Administration that is also a CHAMPVA provider.  The Cheyenne VAMC campus is also the location of a Veterans Benefits Administration Regional Office.
