  • Oceans and fisheries affairs - most importantly support for the EU-wide driftnet ban

  • R&D for nuclear, conventional and alternative energy

HEALTH

  • Environmental health threats

  • Immigration and public health

  • Infectious diseases

  • Public health systems

In this capacity, the Section can serve as a point of contact for technical agencies of the U.S. government, American universities, associations, private companies, and non-government organizations working in EST fields and/or performing basic and applied research activities in the aforementioned areas. At the same time the Section helps to facilitate contacts and cooperation between these entities and counterparts in Italy.

The Section works closely with other key offices and sections within the Embassy which oversee similar or related issues, principally, the Economic Section, the Office of Agricultural Affairs, the Foreign Commercial Service (FCS), the Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC), and the Office of Public Affairs (PA).
