Proposed Upgrade and Improvement of the National Synchrotron Light Source Complex at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York

This Environmental Assessment addresses the proposed action by the U.S. Department of Energy to upgrade the facilities of the National Synchrotron Light Source Complex, namely the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Accelerator Test Facility and the Source Development Laboratory. The environmental effects of a No-Action Alternative as well as a Proposed Action are evaluated in the Environmental Assessment.

The “NSLS Environmental Assessment Fact Sheet” link below leads to a one-page summary of the Environmental Assessment.

The “NSLS Environmental Assessment” link below leads to the whole 41-page document that includes figures.

The "NSLS Finding of No Significant Impact" is an 8-page summary of the Environmental Assessment (EA) and is the document that DOE must sign to indicate approval of the EA. The DOE cover memo is also available below.

Auguest 3, 2011 - The decision to implement the Proposed Action was not taken. Instead an effort was begun to develop a totally new, state-of-the-art facility, NSLS-II. DOE accepted the NSLS-II Conceptual Design (CD-0) on August 25, 2005. As such, the No-Action Alternative of the NSLS Environmental Assessment remains valid. NOTE: Management of the Accelerator Test Facility has moved to the BNL Physics Department.
