Steven Hoey

Environment, Safety and Health Manager


Steve Hoey is the Environment, Safety and Health Manager for the Photon Sciences Directorate. He is responsible for implementing and overseeing the directorate's ESH program, including Integrated Safety Management, the Environmental Management System and the Occupational Safety and Health System.

Hoey joined Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1988 as a Safety Engineer in the Safety and Environmental Protection Division. In 1992, he was promoted to Manager of the Safety Engineering Group and served in that capacity until 2000, when he became Manager of the Lab’s Safety Management Systems Integration Organization. During that period, he also served as the Interim Manager of the Safety and Health Services Division, from 2003 to 2004. He joined the Center for Functional Nanomaterials in 2006 as the Safety and Operations Manager for the construction and commissioning of that facility.

Before coming to Brookhaven, Hoey held various safety-related positions at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Martin Marietta Aerospace and Eaton Airborne Instrument Laboratory.

Hoey earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Industrial Technology from Illinois State University and a Master of Science in Environmental and Hazardous Waste Management from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is a Certified Safety Professional and a Certified Project Management Professional.
