ANNOTATION: This “analysis describes how the size and composition of the federal prison population have changed over time and apportions this population growth into shares associated with the different stages of the criminal justice process that determine who is sent to prison and the duration of their incarceration … The increase in expected time served by drug offenders was the single greatest contributor to growth in the federal prison population between 1998 and 2010” (p. 3). Sections of this report include: highlights; overview; prison population change between 1998 and 2010; framework for understanding growth in the federal prison population; and influences on prison population growth from 1998 to 2010.
