Storm Surveys & Significant Events
Local NWS offices have the responsibility of surveying sites which experience significant weather-related damage. The survey team is usually lead by the Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) and often includes one or more staff meteorologists. The team determines the type of damage (i.e. straight-line wind, microburst, tornado) based on the pattern of debris and the most likely peak wind speed associated with the storm. In the case of a tornado, the touchdown location is identified, as well as the length and width of track, and the strength based on the Enhanced Fujita Scale - EF0 (weakest) to EF5 (strongest).
Below are storm surveys and write-ups from NWS Jacksonville. If you have pictures of storm damage you are willing to share, please contact us via telephone at (904) 741-4370; mail at 13701 Fang Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32218; or email at al.sandrik@noaa.gov.
