New Book: Baseball Americana
Baseball Americana offers a lively narrative history of baseball’s origins and documents the game's rich visual and cultural heritage. Drawing from the vast and varied resources in the Library's collections, it features an array of cartoons, posters, photographs, maps, sheet music covers, and other items.

New Book: Herblock
Authors Haynes Johnson and Harry Katz will speak about Herblock: the Life and Work
of the Great Political Cartoonist in an event sponsored by the Center for the Book.Published in conjunction with a Library of Congress exhibition, Herblock celebrates political cartoonist Herbert Block's life and places his work in context. The book includes more than two hundred cartoons, supplemented by a DVD containing more than 18,000 more drawings.

Historic American Buildings Survey 75th Anniversary - Webcast
A symposium held on November 14, 2008, marked the 75th anniversary of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), America's first federal historic preservation program. A morning session, "Celebrating the Past and Present," featured four speakers who highlighted the origins and development of HABS. Two speakers in the afternoon session, "HABS: Planning for the Future," discussed opportunities and challenges, particularly in light of new technologies.

Photochrom travel views of Canada, Wales, and Belgium
The "Photochrom Travel View" set in Flickr now features more than 600 prints, including scenes in Canada, Wales, and Belgium photographed at the turn of the twentieth century. The Belgian scenes, in particular, feature people at work and recreation, in addition to the striking landscapes and landmark buildings characteristic of the photochroms in general.

Flickr Member Goes the Distance to Resolve a Mystery
Flickr members continue to amaze us with the effort and ingenuity they put into resolving the mysteries some photos pose. Several questioned the location given for photos Andreas Feininger took in Colorado in December 1942. Participant "zyrcster" pinned down the location to US 40 west of Denver and offered a "then and now" photograph by way of evidence. Bravo!

Milton Rogovin--Best Wishes
The noted social documentary photographer Milton Rogovin will celebrate his 100th birthday in December 2009. In honor of this milestone, the Prints and Photographs Division's online catalog now offers more than 100 images to represent his six decades of achievement.

Master fine-art photographer Nicholas A. Price
spent 18 months, from 2005 to 2007, capturing
images of the men and women of the U.S. Air Force
to tell the story of their pride and dedication, stamina
and service. The resulting set of 60 photographs
is now in the Library of Congress collections.

The collection is a purchase and gift from Charles Randall Dean in 2009

In Memoriam: John R. Stokes
John R. Stokes, 79, an innovator in imaging systems for photographic archives, died July 25, 2009, in Austin, Texas. Stokes brought a wonderful problem solving and educational spirit into twenty years of pioneering work with videodisc and digital camera capture technology. We are grateful for the systems he designed so well to produce millions of high quality images for the Library of Congress and many other archives. And we will long benefit from all he taught us about effective digitization of visual collections.
