Overview of the
Body Armor Safety Initiative |
At the direction of the Attorney General, the National
Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the Office of Justice Programs
is examining the performance of used Zylon®-based body armor.
A statistically-based test protocol has been developed that
will require NIJ to obtain certain used armors from law
enforcement agencies around the country. In the coming weeks,
staff of the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) program will
be contacting selected agencies that have purchased
Zylon®-based armors using BVP funds, requesting that they
submit selected units of these armors for testing along with
information regarding their history. Agencies will be provided
with the necessary funding to replace the armor sample
submitted. Thank you for your assistance with this extremely
important law enforcement safety issue.
