New USDA Workshop!
USDA / Animal Care and AWIC are sponsoring a joint workshop entitled "Considering Alternatives, Making a Difference." From the USDA website: "This course is based on the highly-successful AWIC workshops usually held at their headquarters in Beltsville, Maryland. In addition, you will hear real-life examples of different ways the 3Rs have been incorporated into research protocols, and you will be given the USDA regulator’s perspective on this topic. Who should attend: IACUC members, principle investigators, research administrators, members of the general public." The workshop will be held at the USDA Beacon Building in Kansas City, MO, September 23-24th. The workshop is FREE, but space is limited!

APHIS will be posting research facility inspection reports on their website in the near future. Although inspection reports have been available through the Freedom of Information Act for many years, this will allow anyone with an internet connection to view inspection reports instantly. Institutions may want to review the procedure for appealing USDA citations, which is available in Animal Care's Research Facility Inspection Guide, section 7.8.

Preparing for a pandemic: Institutions may want to consider drafting a policy on conducting official business during a pandemic, or adding specific provisions to an existing disaster plan. Click HERE for a sample policy drafted by Molly Greene of Michigan State University.

OLAW has added a question to their FAQ; "How can institutions and their IACUCs best prepare for a pandemic?"
