Supporting Radiological and Nuclear Detection Standards

The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) supports the development, maintenance, and revision of national and international consensus standards for radiological and nuclear detection systems.  DNDO also develops and maintains technical capability standards for radiation detection and non-intrusive imaging systems in accordance with the SAFE Port Act of 2006.  Technical capability standards supplement industry standards by establishing radiological and nuclear detection goals unique to the Government.

Standards are critical to ensuring that radiation detection systems being developed and acquired by the Department and its federal, state, and local partners meet basic performance, functionality, and operability criteria. Adherence to standards -- confirmed through testing -- ensures sound and effective technologies. Standards are modified and updated on a regular basis to ensure relevancy, completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
