New York, Virginia & Puerto Rico

The New York, Virginia and Puerto Rico Dependents Schools operate elementary and secondary schools on Department of Defense installations in New York, Virginia and Puerto Rico. We are a district within the Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS). We are also a part of the worldwide Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).

We serve the dependents of military personnel that live aboard the following installations:
USMA West Point, NSWC Dahlgren, MCB Quantico, USA Fort Buchanan, USCG Air Station Borinquen, and USCG Sector San Juan.

The schools at all of these communities are administered through a central office, the District Superintendent. Though we have a single administration, NY/VA/PR recognizes the unique characteristics of each installation and strives to serve the individual needs of that community.

Mission

Educate, Engage, and Empower Each student to succeed in a dynamic world.

About Us - Curriculum

Our schools' curriculum are aligned to the DoDEA academic standards. Our academic programs follow a six-year curriculum cycle. The different curriculum areas go through an intensive review process which includes: program review, standards review/revision, instructional materials review/adoption, implementation, and assessment review/revision.

About Us - Assessment

One of the best ways of monitoring student progress and helping our students succeed is through standardized assessments. These assessments are designed to measure student achievement in academic subjects. This information is used to help teachers and parents determine the strengths and needs of students, and to provide accountability for our schools.

About Us - Accreditation

CONTINUOUS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT and SCHOOL ACCREDITATION

Continuous School Improvement and School Accreditation are two primary vehicles whereby schools  work to meet the goals of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Community Strategic Plan (CSP). The DoDEA accrediting agency is Advanc-ED which is the world’s largest educational network serving 27,000 public and private schools throughout the United States, 69 worldwide countries, all Department of Defense schools, and 15 million students. In 2006, the Board of Trustees of the North Central Association Commission on Education and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Board of Directors of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) voted to unite forming a strong, unified organization and national leader for quality education known as Advanc-ED.

Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance developed more than 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools. Accreditation engages the entire school community in a continuous process of self-evaluation, reflection, and improvement. It invites external validation by AdvancED and welcomes the constructive feedback of a validation team of trained peers visiting the schools. School accreditation is based on rigorous data and requires documentation of improvement efforts, results, and impact on student achievement. The accreditation process is based on a five-year term of accreditation and assures DoDEA that the NY/VA/PR District schools are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation. The cornerstones of accreditation involve meeting quality research-based standards, engaging in continuous school improvement, and demonstrating quality assurance in each of our schools.

A Continuous School Improvement (CSI) Team leads the school improvement process in each school. CSI leadership includes the principal, all staff members, parents, and at least one local military command representative; at the high school level, at least one student representative is on the CSI Team. The responsibilities of the CSI Team are to provide leadership throughout the entire school improvement process, maintain a constant community focus on improving student learning, and monitor progress and document change in student performance.

The DoDEA NY/VA/PR District is pleased to announce that all eleven schools in our district are fully accredited. This year, four schools in our district will receive a Quality Assurance Review (QAR) Team accreditation visit in April: Ashurst ES, Burrows ES, Russell ES, and Dahlgren School. We are excited about these upcoming visits and look forward to continuing our journey to school improvement and school accreditation.

Please call 703-630-7027 if you have any questions regarding accreditation or school improvement.
