READ 180

The Literacy Place is the home of the Read 180 students in fourth and fifth grades.  Read 180 is an integral part of the Fourth and Fifth Grade Language Arts curriculum. Read 180 students attend The Literacy Place during the Fourth and Fifth grade Language Arts classes.  Fourth grade students are in the class daily from 8:20-10:20. Fifth grade students are in the class from 12:00-2:00 daily. The Read 180 classes are taught by Mrs. W., the Reading Specialist.

READ 180 supports our school system in its effort to improve reading achievements for students in the upper elementary and

middle grades.  READ 180 is a powerful research-based teaching tool designed to:

·  deliver individualized, adjusted reading instruction

·  provide practice and  application of skills in multiple contexts

·  support and motivate students to continue to be lifelong readers

Curriculum Overview

Instruction in reading, spelling, and writing in READ 180 is provided in a 120 minute class period. During the 120 minute READ180 class period, students go through four rotations.  Whole Group Instruction, includes 20 minute instruction in language arts skills; small group rotations include READ 180 audio books, where students listen to selected READ180 books;  READ 180 software where students  study reading, vocabulary and spelling using READ 180 CD's; and small group instruction with Mrs. W. where students continue the work introduced in Whole Group Instruction. All components of  the READ 180 Program work together to achieve literacy proficiency  for the READ 180 STUDENT.
