Brigadier General Donald E. Stout is commander, 47th Air Division (Strategic Air Command), Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash.
General Stout was born in 1923, in Emporia, Kan. He graduated from high school in Lawrence, Kan., and attended the University of Kansas from 1940 to 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in May 1942 and graduated from pilot training at Fort Sumner Army Airfield, N.M., with his pilot wings and a commission as second lieutenant in August 1943.
In August 1943, General Stout was assigned as a pilot in bombardier training schools at Albuquerque and Carlsbad, N.M. Between November 1944 and April 1945, he completed B-17 and B-29 aircraft transition training at Roswell Army Airfield, N.M., and in August 1945 he completed B-29 combat crew training at Gulfport Army Airfield, Miss. He then served as a pilot in two B-29-equipped units -- the 498th Bombardment Group at MacDill Army Airfield, Fla., and the 22d Bombardment Group on Okinawa.
In December 1947, he was assigned to a C-54 aircraft troop carrier squadron at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. He graduated from the Air Tactical School, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., in 1948. From December 1948 until March 1953, he was assigned to the 72d Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron with duty at Ladd Field, Alaska; Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho; and Travis Air Force Base, Calif. In this unit he served as aircraft commander in RB-29 and RB-36 type aircraft, squadron operations officer and squadron commander.
From May 1953 to May 1955, he served as an air training officer in Headquarters 5th Strategic Reconnaissance Group, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. He attended Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., from June 1955 to June 1957, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in international relations.
General Stout was assigned in July 1957 to the 28th Bombardment Wing, a B-52 aircraft organization stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., where he held positions as an operations officer, squadron commander and wing deputy commander for operations. He served as deputy commander for operations, 95th Bombardment Wing, a B-52 organization, at Biggs Air Force Base, Texas from July 1961 to August 1962.
He was commander of the Strategic Air Command Reflex Action Forces at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, from September 1962 to February 1963. He was then assigned to March Air Force Base, Calif., where he became deputy director for operations, 15th Air Force. In June 1965 he was assigned to the National War College in Washington, D.C., where he graduated in June 1966. While at the National War College he attended The George Washington University and earned his masters degree in international affairs.
His next assignment was to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C., where he served in the Strategic Operations Division, J-3, as action officer, branch chief, and division chief. In July 1968 he was assigned to the National Military Command Center as a Deputy Director for Operations.
From June 1969 to July 1972 General Stout served at Stuttgart, Germany, as deputy director J-3 (Command and Control), Headquarters U.S. European Command. General Stout became commander, 47th Air Division (SAC), Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., Aug. 31, 1972.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He is a command pilot.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective Aug. l, 1968, with date of rank July 24, 1968.
