Major General Harold Emmett Humfeld is director of maintenance engineering, Deputy Chief of Staff for Systems and Logistics, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He manages, through development of plans, policies and procedures, about one-third of the U.S. Air Force worldwide manpower and dollar resources, and is responsible for the maintenance of operational readiness of complex and costly weapon systems.
General Humfeld was born in Clay Center, Kan., in 1915. He entered military service in February 1938, attended flying schools at Randolph and Kelly fields, Texas, and received his commission and pilot wings in February 1939.
General Humfeld has had a distinguished and versatile military career in command, operations and maintenance assignments. In World War II he served in the Mariana Islands. He served 14 months temporary duty outside the United States during the Korean War in support of that conflict. He joined the Strategic Air Command in 1949 and served in a variety of capacities. General Humfeld, as director of operations for SAC, held prime operational responsibility for the command's global force of missiles and bombers.
A former deputy commander of Fifteenth Air Force, the general has also served as director of operations at Eighth Air Force Headquarters, as senior SAC representative to the commander in chief, Europe, in Paris, and as commander of the 340th Bombardment Wing, 17th Air Division, and 40th Air Division. As commander of the 40th Air Division he organized, equipped and trained the first B-52H units at Wurtsmith, K.I. Sawyer and Kincheloe Air Force bases in Michigan. In spite of exceptionally severe weather conditions, these units became combat ready in minimum time without loss of a combat crewmember or aircraft.
Prior to his assignment as director of maintenance engineering at Headquarters U.S. Air Force, he was commander of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division (SAC) at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., the most active launch site for intercontinental ballistic missiles and orbiting satellites.
General Humfeld is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles and an alumnus of the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
The general is a command pilot with 10,000 flying hours in various military aircraft. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters and the Army Commendation Medal.
