Dahlgren School Mission Statement:

Dahlgren School Vision Statement:

The vision of Dahlgren School is to engage all students in varied learning opportunities; to foster high levels of achievement; and to prepare them for success in an ever-changing global environment.

Target Goals:

Smart Goal 1: All students will improve reading comprehension (the ability to understand and express ideas derived from real-world content across the curriculum) as measured by a 5% increase in the number of students scoring at or above standard each academic year, using selected system-wide and local assessments.

Instructional Interventions:

  • Students will:  Practice retaining important information and deleting unimportant information through the use of graphic organizers at least one time per unit.
  • Students will:  Practice condensing main ideas in written or spoken form (Retelling – Pre-K–2; Summarizing 3-8) at least one time per unit.
  • Students will:  Use the rubric to self-assess the effectiveness of their summarizing at least once per unit.


Smart Goal 2
:  As a stretch initiative, students will ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve, as appropriate, in order to solve problems as measured by a 5% increase in the number of students scoring at or above standard, on Terra Nova Science and Math Assessments and local assessments.

Instructional Interventions
:

  • Students will apply the steps of the Engineering Design Process a minimum of three times per year
  • Students in each grade level will participate in a minimum of three inquiry-based/STEM-related challenges per year
    • K-5 = Lego Robotics, Engineering is Elementary
    • 6-8 = Robotics, Solar Ovens, Gravity Cars, Sea Perch

  • Reading Street Baseline Assessment, Grades K-6 – Pre, Mid, Post Assessments
  • Elements of Literature Assessment, Grades 7, 8

 

Pre, Mid, Post Assessments

  • Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) Grades   K-3 – Pre and Post Assessments
  • Scholastic Reading Inventory Grades 3-8 Pre, Mid, Post Assessments
  • Concepts of Print Inventory, Kindergarten, Pre, Mid, Post Assessments

 

Local Assessments Smart Goal 2:

  • All classes (K -12) will complete the National Center for Technological Literacy STEM Assessment in Fall 2012, Winter 2013, and Spring 2013 to measure progress toward Smart Goal 2.
  • Each grade band has specific questions geared to that particular level
