Analytical Tools

The Bioenergy Technologies Office and its national lab partners provide a variety of online tools to help analyze data and facilitate decision making. This page links to several of them and includes a widget that calculates the potential volume of ethanol produced from biomass feedstocks.

Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF): The Bioenergy Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF) facilitates informed decision making by providing a means to synthesize, analyze, and visualize vast amounts of information in a spatially integrated manner. This GIS-based framework allows users to comprehensively analyze the economic and environmental impacts of various development options for biomass feedstocks, biorefineries, and infrastructure.

BioFuels Atlas: The BioFuels Atlas is an interactive map that compares biomass feedstocks and biofuels by location. This tool helps users select from and apply biomass data layers to a map, as well as query and download biofuels and feedstock data. The state zoom function summarizes state energy use and infrastructure for traditional and bioenergy power, fuels, and resources. The tool also calculates the biofuels potential for a given area.

Bioenergy Conversion Factors: This quick-reference list of conversion factors is used by the Bioenergy Feedstock Development Programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It was compiled from a wide range of sources, and is designed to be concise and convenient rather than all inclusive.

Standard Biomass Analytical Procedures: These National Renewable Energy Laboratory and analogous American Society for Testing and Materials laboratory procedures provide tested and accepted methods for performing analyses commonly used in biofuels research.
