Specific Area Message Encoding

Annoyed that your NOAA Weather Radio alerts you of severe weather outside your county while sleeping? A new generation of NOAA Weather Radio receivers have a Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) feature that allows consumers to be alerted for official NWS watches and warnings by specific counties of their choosing. Your older NOAA Weather Radio receivers will continue to work as they have before, but the older receivers do not allow listeners to screen out weather service alarms for individual counties.  Click Here for information on buying a NOAA Weather Radio.

What's My Number?

To program NWR SAME receivers with the proper county(s) and marine area(s) of choice, you need to know the 6-digit SAME code number(s) for that county(s). Once you have the number, follow the directions supplied the manufacturer of your NWR SAME receiver for programming. The FIPS codes for the counties covered by each of our transmitters are listed above.  The number is also available via the following two methods:

• By telephone at 1-888-NWR-SAME (1-888-697-7263) for a voice menu.
