Why Giving Is ImportantCombined Federal Campaign Logo

Last year was the first time that federal civilian, postal and military donors helped the Combined Federal Campaign cross the threshold of pledging a total of $7 billion dollars over the past 50 years.

Did you know that CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign with more than 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and internationally? Giving back is important for many reasons and here are just a few:

Engaging your workforce. It can bring people together and form common bonds Engaged employees are more productive It feels good. Giving back reminds us how fortunate we are.

Allows you to make a difference

So how are you making a difference?  Many living in the United States lead a privileged life.  If you don’t think so, turn on the news or talk to a friend or neighbor. It doesn’t take much to tip the scales and experience hardships like the loss of a job, home, or health.

CFC is an opportunity to take a moment to give back to your community no matter your motivation for doing so.  This year’s CFC goal is $3.5 million dollars. Let service and philanthropy be part of your life this year and give.

Three people working in the DFC peoples garden

Did you know that the DFC has a People’s Garden? It’s lead by the USDA Farm Service Administration, and volunteers from other federal agencies and community members help maintain it. The garden accomplishes many things including donating close to 500 pounds of fresh produce to a local food pantry, the Action Center. Because of the garden’s location, it also helps educate the 110 children from the Clever Kids Learning Center on healthier lifestyles.

This year, the People’s Garden Initiative is partnering with Keep America Beautiful on the first ever National Planting Day! This is a nationwide call to plant native species from September 8 through November 30. The garden already plants native species which shows how easy it is to work harmoniously with nature while beautifying our campus.

Help spread the word about National Planting Day! Tell your co-workers, community partners, friends and family about the importance of native species and consider getting involved with our People’s Garden. Contact Mary Moore at mary.moore@co.usda.gov for volunteer opportunities.

Every Drip Counts – Xeriscaping at the DFC

Image of Building 95 traffic circle make-overThis summer, Building 95’s traffic circle got a make-over.  Approximately one-third of the lawn area remains and the other two-thirds of the area were turned into mulched planting beds and multiple seating areas.

When funding is available to refurbish a land area, Xeriscaping is the first option the DFC team considers. Xeriscaping is a creative landscaping technique that uses low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants grouped together to form natural-looking landscapes that conserve energy, natural resources and water. Xeriscape focuses on water conservation through water efficiency, but it does not mean dry landscaping and no water..

There are seven principles associated with Xeriscape landscapes. For more in-depth information regarding the seven principles, visit: http://xeriscape.sustainablesources.com/ (non-government website).
