The Clean Watersheds Needs Survey (CWNS) 2012 official data collection period was from January 9, 2012 through November 9, 2012. For CWNS 2012, EPA's goal was to make it easier for states and local communities to submit and utilize CWNS data by:
- Enhancing the CWNS Data Entry Portal (DEP) to reduce state data entry effort
- Improving survey methods to reduce state and EPA resources to conduct CWNS 2012

Important Dates
- November 2010 - March 2011: EPA provided training on CWNS 2012 via a Webcast series for state and regional coordinators
- November 2010: EPA began reviewing innovative methodologies proposed by states for documenting needs and costs. States were permitted to submit proposals until March 30, 2012
- April - June 2011: EPA hosted four "Super Regional" Training sessions for state and regional CWNS coordinators to provide training about CWNS eligibility and documentation and data entry
- November - December 2011: Optional interim data entry period
- December 7-9, 2011: EPA hosted an additional Super Regional Training session in Dallas, TX (EPA Region 6 Office)
- January 9, 2012: Official data entry period began
- November 9, 2012 at 11:59PM EST: Official data entry period ends
- December 7, 2012 at 11:59PM EST: Data correction period ends
- January 2012 - January 2013: EPA reviews state data
- Spring 2013: EPA hosts CWNS 2012 End of Survey Meeting in Washington, DC
- Late 2013: EPA delivers CWNS 2012 Report to Congress and provides data to the public via the EPA website
