Bay Area Discovery Museum and Marin Head Start Partnership
The museum seeks to infuse all museum offerings with broader cultural perspectives using “My First Museum” as a program prototype. Marin Head Start will help test and evaluate program prototypes for a teachers’ guide and family guide. Head Start also participates in the museum’s Master Teacher Residency Program, which sends a master teacher with expertise in the arts or sciences to facilitate hands-on classroom activities. The partnership wants to create a collaborative, onsite exhibit at the museum that will allow Head Start classrooms to add to the display each time they visit throughout the school year. [PDF, 59KB]

The partnership’s overall goals are to develop an ongoing relationship with Head Start centers, support Head Start programs, provide as much free programming as possible, and encourage Head Start families to visit the museum to enjoy the family learning opportunities. A program called “Open Door” provides Head Start groups with free museum trips and “After School Adventures” offers free, after-school programming. Minnesota Children’s Museum and Anoka Community Action Program, Community Action Partnership of Ramsey and Washington Counties, and Parents in Community Action
The Minnesota Children’s Museum is working with three different Head Start grantees. The museum provides teacher workshops and trainings after consulting with Head Start staff on potential topics. Training topics have included Family Math Training; Pint-Size Science (addresses physical science and how adults can provide a science learning environment using everyday materials); Nurturing Nature (providing opportunities for exploring plants and animals and their relationship to the environment); Music and Movement; and Drawing to Learn (a visual arts-focused training). Museum family nights and free memberships are offered as part of the partnership. The museum is exploring how to effectively offer trainings for home-based providers. [PDF, 162KB]
