NLM Sponsors Symposium on "The Library as Place"

The National Library of Medicine, NIH, is co-sponsoring a 2-day symposium on November 5-6  that will explore the library as a physical place in a digital world. The symposium will be held in the Library's Lister Hill Center Auditorium, Building 38A on the NIH campus in Bethesda,  Md. NLM is co-sponsoring the Symposium with the Association of Academic Health Science Librarians.

There are a variety of opinions on just what should be the role library in the 21st century. Is it primarily a physical place? Has the virtual world of the Web replaced it? The spectrum of opinion will be aired in a panel discussion on the first morning. Other topics related to the "Library as Place" will be addressed in panel sessions, poster presentations, and exhibits. Presenters represent academia, the library community, industry, research laboratories, and architects.

Keynote speakers:

  • Congressman Bill Young (R-FL) (Invited)--What Libraries Mean to America
  • Timothy Hunt, Imperial Cancer Research Fund and 2001 Nobelist--The Library as Place: Thoughts of a Scholar and Researcher

Although the symposium is fully subscribed, members of the press may still register by getting in touch with Kathy Cravedi, 301-496-6308, kathleen_cravedi@nlm.nih.gov.
