Curriculum Spotlight

READ 180: This is a systematic reading program that delivers individualized instruction that will improve fluency, create mental models and understand more complex written information through word analysis and vocabulary development. This is accomplished through a variety of reading experiences that integrate with History and Geography, People and Culture and Science and Math topics. The READ 180 model consist of a 90 minute rotation of activities. Twenty minute is spent in each of the four majoNovember 7, 2012cated to a whole class wrap-up period. The four major components of READ 180 are Instructional Reading, Modeled Reading, Reading Independent Reading, and Teacher-Directed Instruction.

Reading Counts: A computerized reading program for students in grades K-5. The books in the library are color coded to indicate lexiles so students are able to select books within their appropriate reading ability range and subject. After students complete a book, they take a computerized test to show their skill in comprehension. It is designed specifically to promote interest in reading.

Technology Opportunities:A variety of technology supports student curriculum. All classrooms have four or more computers available for students use. Every class has a digital camera, a computer monitor projection capability for group viewing, closed circuit and cable TV.

DeLalio has a computer lab available for teachers to conduct large group instruction. The lab is always open for students and teachers. The Educational Technologist conducts software orientation lessons and works with the teachers on collaborative technology projects for their classes. The ET also serves as a resource for curriculum planning to determine how technology can improve the quality of education and achievement for the students.

Gagglenet email is a web based email program designed to be used by student to enhance learning opportunities. The web environment is customized and controlled. Students will be monitored to ensure safe usage. We believe this program will provide an opportunity to correspond with deployed parents, make new friends through pen pals and learn about cultures in other places. As email has become a critcal part of life in business, government, this is the next logical step for education in preparing students for the future. Students in third through fifth participate in the program.

Type to Learn is a keyboarding program for students in grades 3-5. It is very interactive and entertaining for the students. Students work on individual lessons in the computer lab at least three times a week for 30 minutes. They can also work on Type to Learn in their classrooms. The goal is to reach 15 words per minute and an accuracy of 75% in third grade, 20 WPM and 80% accuracy in fourth grade and then by fifth grade reach 25 WPM with an accuracy of 85%.
