Claudia Shaw

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — October 5, 2007 — Mr. Kevin Kelly, Associate Director for Financial and Business Operations for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA), has named Claudia Shaw as the organization's Resource Management Division Chief.

Shaw, a native of Yorktown, Virginia, attended college at George Mason University, obtaining a degree in Business, and earned her Associate Degree from Northern Virginia Community College in Accounting.

Kelly cited Shaw's experience and knowledge of many aspects of DoDEA's fiscal operations in announcing her selection.

"Resource management is critical to DoDEA's mission of academic success for all of our students," said Kevin Kelly. "In selecting Claudia for this position, we feel she brings a valuable in-depth knowledge of the entire scope of our operations. Her first-hand experiences as the Chief of our Budget Execution Branch, as well as her perspective and corporate knowledge, will enable us to make the most efficient and effective use of our resources so we can continue to provide the highest quality education for our students."

As a child, Shaw attended Kindergarten though fourth-grade at Camp Darby, Livorno Elementary School, in Italy. Having been a Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) student herself, Shaw is excited about helping to further support the teachers and students of DoDEA schools.

"Those five years provided me with an excellent education and life long friends," she said. "I will always remember those years and the teachers who served me. Attending Livorno Elementary School made a big impact in my life; it really gave me an excellent start in my education."

Shaw has a vast background in management. She started her work with the federal government as an Accounting Technician and was later promoted to an Operating Accountant at Washington Headquarters Services. She joined DoDEA in the summer of 1994 as an Operating Accountant.

In 1998 Shaw transitioned into the DoDEA Budget Execution Branch as a Budget Analyst. In January of 2000, she moved to Germany and became the Budget Officer for the Hessen and later the Heidelberg District. Shaw then moved to the DoDDS Europe Area Office as the Chief Budget Officer for Europe.

She returned to Washington in 2005 and served as the Chief, Resource Management Office, Budget Execution Branch for the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. Shaw returned to DoDEA in 2006 as the Chief of Budget Execution in the Resources Management Division.

In her new position, Shaw will be managing the budget for DoDEA headquarters and for DoDEA schools across the globe.

For Fiscal Year 2008, Shaw sees one of her biggest challenges in the implementation of the National Security Personnel System (NSPS) and moving the agency forward to meet new and challenging financial goals.

Shaw also expects to manage approximately $1.8 billion dollars this fiscal year. DoDEA's fiscal year 2007 budget closed at just over $2 billion. Shaw said until the President signs the Fiscal Year 2008 budget, the agency will operate under a continuing resolution.

"Last year was a tough year," she said, "but we are excited about the road ahead".

Shaw is an avid Washington Redskins fan. She also enjoys going to the movies, traveling and playing with her two dogs, Samantha and Cara.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages the education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA consists of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) located overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) located in the United States and its territories and possessions. DoDEA provides education to eligible DoD military and civilian dependents from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
