The California National Guard established an Aeronautical Detachment of its 7th Company, Coast Artillery Corps.

Eugene Ely, a civilian pilot employed by pioneer aircraft builder Glenn H. Curtiss, enlisted as a private in the Coast Artillery Corps of the California National Guard with the objective of serving as a Guard aviator. Ely had been the first man to fly an aircraft from a warship in 1910 and made history again in January 1911 when he was the first to land a plane on a naval vessel.
