The Week Ahead

Monday, March 4

  • Congressman Yarmuth returns to Washington, where the focus this week will be on enacting a Continuing Resolution to fund the government beyond March 27 and avoid a government shutdown.
  • Congressman Yarmuth cosponsors H.R. 769, the Child Tax Credit Permanency Act. This legislation would permanently expand and index to inflation the Child Tax Credit.
  • Congressman Yarmuth meets with local constituents and representatives from the Kentucky Association for Career and Technical Education.
  • The House is expected to consider H.R. 307 under suspension of the rules. The Senate Amendment to Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization would reauthorize and modify numerous medical disaster and emergency response programs intended to facilitate the development of chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear medical countermeasures.
  • The University of Louisville men’s basketball team hosts the Cincinnati Bearcats in a crucial Big East Conference matchup. GO CARDS!

 

Tuesday, March 5

  • 9:30 AM: Congressman Yarmuth calls in to the Geraldo Rivera Radio Show to discuss implementation of the sequester cuts.
  • 10:00 AM: The Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions holds a Congressional hearing entitled, “Challenges Facing Multi-Employer Pension Plans: Reviewing the Latest Findings by PBGC and GAO.”
  • Congressman Yarmuth meets with local constituents and representatives from Bellarmine University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Kentucky School Nutrition Association, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the Kentucky Broadcasters Association.
  • The House is expected to consider two measures under suspension of the rules, including H.R. 668, which would require the President's annual budget submissions to Congress to include an estimate of the cost per taxpayer of any projected deficits.

 

Wednesday, March 6

  • Congressman Yarmuth urges House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to provide increased funding for the COPS Hiring Program, which enables the federal government to fill personnel gaps and help communities across the country hire law enforcement officials to help combat gun violence.
  • Congressman Yarmuth meets with local constituents and representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars USA, Teach for America, Beam Inc., the American Diabetes Association, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Arthritis Foundation, Kentucky Humanities Council, and the Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky.
  • The House is expected to begin consideration of the full-Year Continuing Resolution and Defense Appropriations, Department of Defense, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act. The bill would fund government operations through Sept. 30, the remainder of FY 2013; the current continuing resolution financing the government expires March 27. All the funding provided by the measure will be subject to the across-the-board sequestration that became effective on March 1, which cuts $85 billion from government spending in FY 2013.

 

Thursday, March 7

  • Visitors to the office include students from Louisville Collegiate Middle School and representatives from the Kentucky Association for Community Action.
  • Congressman Yarmuth talks with 970 WGTK’s Joe Elliott to update listeners on his work in Louisville and Washington.
  • The House is expected to vote on the Continuing Resolution to fund the government through Sept. 30.
