Detail from [Handel, Bach, Tartini, Quantz, Gluck and Jommelli] by an unknown artist, probably 18th century. Dayton C. Miller Collection, Music Division, Library of Congress.
This is a caricature by an unknown artist showing, left to right, Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773) who plays a one-keyed flute; Georg Friederich Handel (1685-1759) who sings the Messiah; Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) who plays the harpsichord; Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) who plays the violin; and, Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck (1714-1787) and Niccolò Jommelli (1714-1774) as boys who sing at the far right.
This etching was purchased from John Finn in 1923 who was about to move from Essex to Norfolk and he wished to dispose of part of his collections. Finn identified the figures in his letter to Miller of 22 February 1923. He also explained that he had purchased it in Germany "years ago" and that it was thought to be an "18th cent. work." No other information about it has been discovered, such as the name of the artist and the source from which it was derived.
