Vest Scholarships Established to Focus
on Global Grand Challenges

March 13 -- A new international scholarship named after NAE President Charles M. Vest was announced today at the Global Grand Challenges Summit in London. The Vest Scholarships, established by eight U.S. universities, will foster collaboration among graduate students focused on tackling the world’s biggest challenges.

    Feb. 28 -- A new report from the National Research Council finds that sustainable urban development is dependent on coordinating and managing underground infrastructure -- such as utilities, transportation networks, and building foundations -- as part of an integrated, above- and below-ground system.

DC Environmental Filmfest

2013 Environmental Film FestivalEvery March, the D.C. Environmental Film Festival presents a diverse selection of quality environmental films at a wide variety of venues throughout the region, and NAS is returning as a festival venue. Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences will screen films on March 14 and 15. Discussions follow both films. Admission is free; photo ID and registration required.

Women Scientists in the Americas

Inter-American Network of Academies of SciencesA new book featuring interviews with prominent female scientists throughout the Americas is available from the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences. The book's release on March 8 -- International Women's Day -- highlights the inclusion and empowerment of women in science and technology.

Giving Opportunities

Gilbert S. Omenn and Martha Darling have given $750,000 to create a permanent two-year fellowship in biomedical science and public policy or population-based medicine. Such generosity allows NAS, NAE, and IOM to help address critical national issues and challenges.
