5th Signal Command to highlight Profession of Arms at annual commemoration ceremony

Story by Sgt. Brian Rodan, 5th Signal Command

WIESBADEN, Germany (November 5, 2012) – 5th Signal Command will host Operation Solemn Promise’s annual commemoration ceremony Nov. 16 at the Lucius D. Clay Kaserne Fitness Center.

Everyone will have the opportunity to join 5th Signal Command at the fitness center or online to experience that feeling they had when they took the oath.  Information about the ceremony and the operation can be found at the OSP website: www.5sigcmd.army.mil/osp

“Each year we commemorate OSP as an opportunity to look inwards and ask ourselves tough questions about what we are doing to prepare our future leaders for the challenges of tomorrow,” said Brig. Gen. Bruce T. Crawford, commander, 5th Signal Command.

Crawford said “I call it Solemn Promise because I literally believe that raising your right hand is a solemn promise to your country.”

The overarching theme of OSP is “A constant reminder of why we serve.”  It began Nov. 17, 2011 with a kick-off ceremony at the Lucius D. Clay Kaserne Fitness Center.  The highlight of the event was a simultaneous re-affirmation of the oath each person took to support and defend the American way of life which is the very essence of responsibility and accountability.

At this year’s ceremony, 5th Signal Command will renew a commitment to the Profession of Arms to help: Address those areas where we struggle to maintain the highest standards; Focus and succeed in an era of persistent conflict ; Maintain the best led and best trained force in the world; Prepare leaders for the challenges of tomorrow.

“By renewing an understanding of our profession we can address those areas where we struggle to maintain the highest standards.  Assessing what it means to be a professional will help us focus and succeed in an era of persistent conflict,” Crawford said.

“Renewing our commitment to the Profession of Arms is essential to ensure we maintain the best led and best trained force in the world. Leadershipis the foundation of our profession,” said Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, chief of staff, United States Army in the Army’s profession of arms campaign plan.

After this year’s ceremony 5th Signal command will be holding several events throughout 2013 that will highlight on the five essential attributes of the Profession of arms– Trust, Military Expertise, Esprit de Corps, Honorable Service, Stewardship of the Profession.
