Dear Family,

The Character word this month is RESPECT. This is a word to which you can probably relate. In a moment of frustration, many parents think, "All I need is a little respect!" What parents really want is for family members to be respectful of others. A respectful family member is someone who helps with chores, gives compliments to others, and acts with understanding on others' feelings. Following are some points you can use to reinforce your child's understanding of respectful behavior.

1. Stand up for yourself and your beliefs.
2. Set goals for success, and work to achieve them.
3. Have confidence in your abilities.
4. Be honest with yourself and others.
5. Think about the consequences of your actions before you make a decision.
6. Choose positive and supportive people as friends.
7. Take care of your body and mind so you can be your best.
8. Stay away from things that will harm you, including tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; enjoy healthy activities, such as sports, music, art, reading, and hanging out with good friends.
9. Like yourself for who you are. Be polite and considerate to everyone.
10. Take pride in your family, school, and community.
11. Accept everyone's differences.
12. Respect yourself: strive to look and act your best.
