Academic Programs and Resources

Core Curriculum

Frequent PCS moves can present a challenge to military-connected students. We are excited that all DoDEA elementary schools worldwide use the same reading and math curriculum.
DoDEA schools offer Reading Street as their elementary literacy program. We have seen tremendous student growth since we began using this comprehensive literacy program!
DoDEA students in Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade use Everyday Math as their math program.
DoDEA students in third grade use EnVisions Math as their math program.

Resources
Please check out our Student Resources page for a variety of links. Two of our most important web-based programs are IXL Math and RAZ-Kids. IXL math and RAZ-Kids are web-based programs that students can access at school or at home. Students can practice different math skills and practice reading on these websites. Students have their own passwords and teachers can run reports to monitor their progress.

Reading Improvement (aka Book Club)

We have great interventions for students who are reading below grade level expectations. If your child qualifies for extra help in this area, one of our three literacy experts will invite them to be part of a small group session. The groups meet several times a week to help students improve their fluency and reading comprehension.

READ 180

Certain third grade students who are reading below grade level qualify for READ 180. This Scholastic program meets for 90 minutes a day to help students improve their fluency and comprehension skills. READ 180 begins in the second semester.

Special Education

Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs. Here at Van Voorhis, we are deeply committed to the success of every child. We encourage you to learn more about DoDEA's commitment to special education.

Gifted Education

Services are provided to children who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment as compared to their peers. Students are referred for consideration either through their test scores or through individual nomination by a parent, teacher, or other professional staff member. The Gifted Review Committee determines student eligibility in this program. Our gifted education teacher provides instruction on a wide variety of topics to eligible students on a weekly basis.  Learn more about DoDEA's philosophy on gifted education.

Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES)

Students receive 90 minutes of Spanish each week (two 45-minute sessions) as part of a pilot program. This instruction is part of our core curriculum.

Technology

We are fortunate to have a variety of tools at our school. Each classroom is equipped with a SmartBoard, Responders, document cameras and computers. We also have two computer labs. Our Educational Technologist helps teachers maximize the potential for technology integration throughout the school day.
