Van Voorhis Policies and Procedures

We pride ourselves on our orderly, peaceful school environment here at Van Voorhis. Our school expectations are really similar to most teachers’ classroom rules: use only friendly words and polite language, follow all playground safety rules, follow classroom instructions the first time, do your best work, and use your hands and feet in friendly ways only. We really focus on sharing our expectations in positive ways – notice that our rules aren’t phrased with the word “don’t.” We have noticed that it’s more effective to focus on what we do want, not what we don’t want!

We ask that students maintain good attendance, follow the dress code, and follow all school rules. Parents, your support is invaluable in this! Please click on the links to learn more about our specific policies.

Attendance

Good attendance is incredibly important. Our teachers are providing our students with a world-class education. When you miss school, you miss out! Please click on the link to see our attendance policy in detail. The concise version is: please have students here by 8:30. Come to the office to sign them in if they are tardy. Please bring a note for any appointments your children have, so that we can excuse their absence. Please call or send a note if your child is at home sick. If your child misses an excessive amount of school, it can have a tremendous negative impact on their learning as well as their social development.

We recognize that military-connected families have special needs, and we support you! Please support us by filling out the appropriate forms for any extended absences. If you are taking a family trip, such as R&R block leave or to help with an emergency in your hometown, please come to the office to fill out the appropriate paperwork. This allows us to excuse this absence and arrange for a work packet for your child.

Inclement Weather

The Fort Knox Community Schools are rarely closed for inclement weather. Generally, the primary roads on Fort Knox remain open even during severe weather.
In the event that school is dismissed early due to severe weather, we will send out a phone dialer message to all of the parents. The buses will still operate during inclement weather. In fact, if the decision is made to close school early, the buses will come right away to pick up the students while the roads are still safe to drive. As part of the enrollment paperwork, parents filled out a document indicating their preference for inclement weather release. If you indicated that you would like your child to ride the bus in the event of an early release, we will place your child on the bus. If you indicated that you would like your child to be picked up at school during an early release, we will keep him or her at school until you or another designated adult arrives. You have indicated on this early release form who is additionally authorized to pick up your child in such an event. For obvious reasons, we won’t allow children to walk or ride their bikes home if the weather is severe.

Please keep your Early Release Form current. Complete and print the attached fillable form and either bring it to the office, or send it in an envelope to school marked “Registrar.” The teacher will give it to our registrar.

School closings or delayed openings are posted on television Channel 98 and on the Fort Knox Web site at www.knox.army.mil .
