Curriculum and Instruction

A typical school week at Van Voorhis involves lessons in literacy, math, science, social studies, PE, art, music, technology, library/research skills, and Spanish. Reading Street is the literacy program used by DoDEA elementary schools worldwide. Students in Kindergarten, first, and second grade use Everyday Math as their primary math program. Third graders use EnVisions Math as their math program. All of the classrooms have SmartBoards, and our teachers integrate technology into their lessons throughout the day. All students in first, second, and third grade learn math for an hour a day with their classroom teacher, but also participate in math intervention classes four times a week for a half hour. Our literacy and gifted education teachers help each grade level with math intervention classes, so we are able to offer small group instruction at just the right level for your child. Our literacy teachers also offer reading improvement lessons for students reading below grade level expectations. Students meet in small groups several times a week and we are very impressed with the results!

To create a world-class education system, DoDEA has developed rigorous and demanding curriculum standards. The curriculum standards specify what students should know and be able to do. DoDEA curriculum standards are based on the content standards produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of English/the International Reading Association, the National Research Council's National Science Education Standards and the National Council for Teachers of Social Studies. Standards are important because they set high levels of learning and performance for all students. The standards also serve as a basis for assessment across the curriculum. They focus on what is important in each curriculum area. Learn more about DoDEA's curriculum at the DoDEA website. There are also Parent Guides to the curriculum that can be accessed.
