About Our School

Our Name

Kingsolver Elementary School is named after former Superintendent William E. Kingsolver, who came to Fort Knox in 1941 and became the first Superintendent of what was then called Fort Knox Independent School. All grades attened school lin one building, now named Briscoe Hall. He served as Superintendent for fourteen years until his untimely death in 1954. Mr. Kingsolver, who was an avid hunter, drowned trying to rescue his hunting dog at the bottom of a 15 foot well.

Kingsolver Elementary School was built in 1956 for 480 students. It is part of a district that includes four elementary schools, two intermediate schools, one middle school, and one high school. A new library was built in 1966 and our current media center in 1988. A major portion of Kingsolver was destroyed by fire in 1987 and reconstruction was finished in August 1989. A new gym was constructed in 1997. During the summer of 2006, a new building with four classrooms was completed. This cluster houses our third grade students, as well as our reading specialist.

At the beginning of SY 2007-2008, we added three new classes due to the increase in our population (due mostly to the district establishing new boundaries and the impact of BRAC- Base Realignment and Closure), SY 2009-2010 added a math coach, SY 2010-2011 added a reading specialist, and then, at the beginning of our current school year, our staffing was increased to include full time specialists that would no longer be shared among other elementary schools aboard Fort Knox.

Kingsolver had a 41.6 % turnover of students during the 2011-2012 academic year and a 62% rate this school year. Most children spend no more than three years in the system; a large percentage of our student body does not remain for the complete school year.

We are partnered with AMEDDAC/Ireland Army Community Hospital (IACH). They assist us in implementing our Mentor Program to provide extra support for struggling students needing additional help. The volunteer soldiers from the AMEDDAC/IACH come to the school and spend 30 to 60 minutes a week with a student with whom they are paired. They often help the student with school work with which they are struggling. However, they also foster a relationship with them as many of our students have parents who are deployed.

Our school is due to be merged with two other schools in the near future. This is a very exciting event for us as our building is over 50 years old. The new building is to be a 21st century school with the best technology for students and teachers. However, the design process is only in the first stages and much is still unknown about the process and timeline. Many staff members as well as parents had been very concerned due to the fear of possibly having the school demolished before the new school is completed. This would have caused our entire student body as well as the entire faculty to have to be relocated and disbursed to other schools on the installation. We had been waiting to learn of the decision relating to this matter and now know that we will be able to remain in our facility as they build the new school. This has created much relief to all affected by this decision. And we are so very thankful to be able to remain in the school as they construct the new building and to not have move during the construction process. However, it is a bittersweet time as we know that next school year, SY 2013-2014, will be the last year that Kingsolver Elementary School will be in existence. But we will certainly make it a very memorable, meaningful one!
