Cabezas Named Superintendent for Georgia/Alabama District

PEACHTREE CITY, GA — November 28, 2012 — Dr. Christy Cabezas was selected and has accepted the Georgia/Alabama District Superintendent's position, according to Dr. Beth Middlemiss, interim director for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)-Cuba.  On Dec. 3, 2012, Dr. Cabezas will officially fill the position left vacant when Mrs. Lois Rapp accepted the Japan District Superintendent's position with DoDDS-Pacific.

Dr. Cabezas comes to DDESS/DoDDS-Cuba from the Harris County (Georgia) Schools where she has served as the assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment since 2009. She began her career as an educator in 1997 when she taught 9th through 12th grade life and physical sciences at Harris County High School (HCHS).  She also served as the Guidance Department Chair and the Secondary Curriculum Coordinator at HCHS.

"While she brings a wealth of educational experience as a teacher, counselor and administrator, she also expresses her deep respect and gratitude to our active military and veterans. As the daughter of an U.S. Army veteran and the mother of a soldier, Dr. Cabezas said she does not take lightly the honor of serving our military families."  

An Indiana native, Dr. Cabezas earned her Doctorate Degree in Administration of Elementary and Secondary Education from Auburn University, in Auburn, AL. She earned her Education Specialist in Education Leadership and Administration and her Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from Troy University, in Phenix City, AL. Dr. Cabezas earned her Master's Degree in School Counseling and her Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Science Education, from Columbus State University, Columbus, GA. 

Dr. Cabezas has two sons, Justin and Jake, a daughter-in-law, Suzie, and a grandson, Kendall. Her father served in the U.S. Army and they lived at Fort Ord, CA, and Fort Meade before settling in Georgia. Her youngest son, Jake, is a Cavalry Scout in the U.S. Army.
