Funding

Photo of a Mapuche woman feeding several children at a table. The Mapuche are a people with a rich history. As the only South American indigenous culture to not be conquered by the Incas or Spaniards, the Mapuche people maintained a strong presence in Chile until the late 19th century when their lands were overtaken by the government. Some migrated to the city of Temuco while others, like these children here, remained in the rural "altiplano." The Professional Society for Rural Development (SOPRODER), in partnership with LWR, has sponsored programs to improve the nutrition and overall living conditions of the Mapuche and preserve their cultural identity.
