SgtMaj Lewis, native of Trinidad Tobago and lifetime resident of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, joined the Marine Corps in July 1987 and underwent recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina where he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class. After recruit training, PFC Lewis attended the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina where he served as a squad leader.
 
In January 1988, he reported to 2d Battalion 8th Marines at Camp Geiger, North Carolina where he served as an automatic rifleman; he was promoted to Lance Corporal in July 1988. In 1989, Lance Corporal Lewis was transferred to 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and deployed with his unit as a part of the Joint Task Force Operations in the Republic of Panama. He was promoted to Corporal in March 1991.

After a deployment with his unit in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, in April 1991, Corporal Lewis was assigned to Weapons Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina where he served first as a Rifle Range Coach and later as a Primary Marksmanship Instructor; He was promoted to Sergeant in May 1993.

In 1994, Sergeant Lewis received orders to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and subsequently to India Company, 3rd Battalion as a Drill Instructor.

After a successful tour, Sergeant Lewis was transferred to 1st Battalion 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In December 1996, Sergeant Lewis deployed with the unit as a part of the Ground Combat Element, Marine Component, Joint Task Force, Pacific Haven Guam. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in March 1997.

In 1998 Staff Sergeant Lewis deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operation Capable (SOC), as a platoon Sergeant with Charlie Company 1st Battalion 6th Marines.

In June 1999, Staff Sergeant Lewis again received orders to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina and subsequently Naval Officer Candidate School, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL. He was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in April 2001.

In July 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Lewis was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines, Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii as the Company Gunnery Sergeant. In June 2004, he was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines, to assume the duties of the Company 1st Sergeant.

In December 2004, he was frocked to 1st Sergeant, and returned to Golf Company as the Company 1st Sergeant. In June 2005 he was deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After returning from Afghanistan 1stSgt Lewis was assigned to Delta Company 1st Recruit Training Battalion Recruit training Regiment Parris Island S.C., as the Company 1stSgt. He later served as Company 1st Sergeant of Recruit Processing Company.

SgtMaj Lewis was promoted to the rank of SgtMaj in April of 2009 and assigned to 1ST BN 12TH as the Battalion SgtMaj. SgtMaj Lewis deployed with 1/12 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011.

SgtMaj Lewis is currently assigned as the SgtMaj for HQ battalion Marine Corps base Hawaii.

SgtMaj Lewis’ awards and decorations include: Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 2 stars); Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (with 1 silver star and two bronze stars) Combat Action Ribbon; Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal; Drill Instructor Ribbon (with 2 star); Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Navy Unit Commendation; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation; Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal; National Defense Service Medal (with 1 star); Southwest Asia Service Award; Kosovo Campaign Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 3 stars; and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 1 silver two bronze stars).
