Briefly:Lorin Kusmin is an economist in the Farm and Rural Household
Well-Being Branch in ERS's Resource and Rural Economics Division.
Since joining ERS in 1990, his research has focused on rural labor
markets. Lorin's areas of research include: relative earnings in
urban and rural labor markets; factors associated with earnings
growth in rural areas; changing skill levels and the returns to
skills in rural labor markets; and employment and
unemployment trends in rural areas.
Current Projects
- Returns to Human Capital in Metro and Nonmetro Areas. This
research examines the differences between returns to human capital
in rural and urban areas and the extent to which these differences
vary with region, gender, and race/ethnicity.
- Employment and Unemployment Trends in Nonmetro Areas. Data in
the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) from the Bureau of
Labor Statistics are used to update trends in employment and
unemployment as reported in ERS's online Rural Development Briefing
Room.
- Rural America at a Glance (editor). This
annual publication provides a summary of information on
socioeconomic trends in rural America as well as additional
information on topics of emerging interest.
- Work relating to Economic Recovery: Lessons Learned From Previous
Recessions, a project describing the most recent recession and
its impact in nonmetro areas in greater detail.
Education:Lorin holds an M.A. degree in economics from Princeton
University and a B.A. in economics from Swarthmore College.
