The Narragansett Bay Reserve’s education goals include:

  • To increase public awareness of Narragansett Bay's environmental, economic, and cultural importance as an estuary
  • To work with our partners to improve public understanding of current estuarine research and natural resource stewardship projects
  • To make estuary data, education programs, activities, and curricula available to Rhode Island schools, colleges, and universities

The reserve works with partners to offer quality education programs to audiences of all ages from Pre-K to teachers, and from scout groups to retired individuals.

The reserve strives to cultivate awareness and knowledge of Narragansett Bay's natural resources and natural history and the changing nature of estuaries in the face of global climate change.  In addition, the education program translates the science of our Reserve’s on-going research, monitoring, and land stewardship practices and projects.  Lastly, the reserve promotes the many resources available to the public in recreation, education and volunteer programs from the reserve.

Examples of the reserve's educational programs include year-round topical tours of the reserve for families and individuals, on and off-site K-12 education programs and summer camps, professional development workshops for educators, on-site community events for the general public, presentations for stakeholders, service learning opportunities, displays and exhibits at statewide public events, and Prudence Island coastal clean-ups.

Each year the Narraganset Bay Reserve organizes and hosts the following special events: Earth Day Beach Cleanup, Narragansett Bay Block Party, Prudence Island Sustainable Fishing Contest, North End Recreation Days, National Estuaries Day Coastal Cleanup, and the Reserve's Holiday Party.
