  Teacher/Volunteer Training: By initiating new Teacher/Volunteer training workshops the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve has been successful in transitioning K-6 programs to a volunteer/teacher led format to allow K-16 instructors to focus on program evaluation and developing new programs.

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve offers a variety of education programs to suit a range of audiences.  The primary goals of the reserve education program are:

  • Engage and excite people about estuaries and the animals and plants that inhabit them
  • Promote awareness of the reserve and its management goals and objectives
  • Translate scientific findings from reserve projects so the public has current information to help them make informed decisions
  • Increase knowledge about living sustainably within the watershed of the reserve

The Reserve’s K-16 & Teacher Programs include volunteer, teacher or Reserve lead learning experiences that are hands on and allow for observation and data recording, utilizing real scientific equipment. Topics include salt marsh life, food chain components, water quality testing, salt marsh vegetation diversity, organism sampling for abundance and diversity (seining), plankton collection and examination, beach profiling, sand analysis, and beach debris analysis, estuarine ecosystems, field lab methodologies, utilizing student data, and much more.

 

The reserve’s general public education programs include lectures and presentations, nature walks, and guided kayak tours. Topics covered include sustainable living practices, reduced waste, water conservation, native wildlife, humpback whales, bald eagles, the gopher tortoise monitoring program, cultural history of the reserve, birds, beaches, and upland habitat.
